The Patient Experience

The total thoracosopic maze takes about 3 1/2 hours to complete. The small incisions used in the operation result in limited patient discomfort, which typically subsides by the second postoperative day. The recovery period is quick and for generally healthy patients, hospitalization is typically only 2 days. Patients are usually ready to return to work full time in 7 days.

All post-maze patients are followed very closely by Dr. John Sirak and his staff. In fact, all patients and their families are given Dr. Sirak's cellular phone number, so as to expedite handling of any issues. Patients are not routinely placed on anti-arrhythmia medicines postoperatively. Rhythm surveillance consists of a week of continuous monitoring using a small, pager-sized device at 3, 6, and 13 months postoperatively. Warfarin is usually discontinued at 3 months, assuming rhythm stability.

Why Ohio State University for the Five-Box Thoracoscopic Maze

Dr. Sirak is a leader in advancing the five-box thoracoscopic approach, with multiple key innovations developed first at The Ohio State University. These include the transmitral line, the left atrial floor line, and the four box verification technique – all first performed with a five-box thoracoscopic approach at OSU. The unrelenting focus on verifying all components of the operation produces superior outcomes for patients even with advanced atrial fibrillation.

Moreover, The Ohio State University Ross Heart Hospital offers the region's only fully dedicated cardiovascular patient facility. The nursing staff is highly experienced in the care of all cardiac surgical patients. All patients stay in spacious, state-of-the-art, private rooms which focus on each individual patient. Rather than transferring between nursing units midway through their hospitalization, patients stay in the same private room until discharge, thereby minimizing any inconvenience to patients and their families.
